A leader is not defined by his or her position in an organization or company. It doesn’t matter if you’re a CEO, a blue-collar supervisor, or a top-dollar earner. We believe a leader is the single mom, the intern that feels overwhelmed in a new position, the dad that can’t seem to find his way.
A leader is not defined by a position of power. A leader is defined by his or her potential to influence the lives of others in a positive way. If your coworkers, your family, or your friends are looking to you for advice, whether spoken or unspoken, you have been called to lead. If you have the opportunity to impart knowledge to someone in a different stage of life, you have been called to lead. If you’ve been placed in a management or supervisory position, or if you’re simply influential in the lives of those around you, you have been called to lead.
A leader is not defined by a position of power. A leader is defined by his or her potential to influence the lives of others in a positive way.
And not only have you been called to lead, but you have the capacity to influence those around you like no one else could. You possess a particular set of skills and experiences that make you the exact person to impact others in a significant way.
This task of leadership is not for someone else. It was intended for you.
You have been called to lead. At Presence Point, we ask you to live into your calling; to shepherd those that are looking to you for support, for growth, for guidance. To not only shepherd, but shepherd well.
And just like that, at the mention of shepherding, a question mark swells within you. A resistance that pushes against the idea that you’ve been called to lead. How can you know? How can you possibly be sure?
If our years of experience have taught us anything, it’s that you already know when you’ve been called to lead. That to lead is the fiber of who you are. That to influence in your community, your church, your family, your workplace is the fiber of who you are.
Indicators that you were called to lead:
- You feel compelled to take responsibly for others.
- You have the insight your organization or family needs.
- If there’s a pause in conversation, eyes turn to you.
- Serving others comes naturally to you.
- You consistently take initiative to succeed or provide an avenue of success for someone else.
- In unfamiliar territory, questions are directed to you.
- You are compelled to speak your mind on issues of importance.

- In the past, you’ve ignored the desire to lead, and were left unfulfilled.
Even though you were called to lead, it doesn’t mean you won’t experience a slew of tensions and fears. You may feel ill-prepared or unequipped to lead someone else down a path you’re not yet walking yourself. Even the most experienced leaders cope with the fear of leading someone astray.
